The pieces people notice are the ones that look like they were always there: a media wall built around an existing fireplace, a run of wardrobes taken right into a sloping eaves, shelving that lines through with the skirting and the picture rail. That only happens if the piece is set out from the actual room, with its out-of-square corners and its floor that falls away towards the window, rather than ordered to a nominal size and packed out afterwards.
I measure the space properly first, working around sloped ceilings, alcoves and awkward corners rather than fitting a standard unit and leaving gaps. Everything is built to the actual dimensions of the room, so it sits flush against the walls and floor.
We talk through what you need to store and how you want it laid out before I start cutting anything, then I build and fit it on site, finishing it to match the rest of the room.

A kitchen is only as good as the fitting. Flat-pack or ready-built, I set the base units level, scribe the end panels and plinths to the floor and walls, and hang the doors so the gaps are even all the way along. It's the difference between a kitchen that looks fitted and one that looks put together.
Bathroom vanity units, cabinets and boxing-in get the same care, cut to fit the space and sealed off neatly so they stand up to a wet room.

I set out from the existing walls and floor, frame the wall with proper noggins and fixings, and line the door opening so the door hangs true afterwards.

Doors take a lot of movement and weather over time, and it usually shows in the same places, rotting timber, dropped hinges or a frame that's swollen and sticking. I replace what's actually gone rather than the whole door where it isn't needed, and fit new doors and gates so they hang square and close properly.
For garden gates I build to the size of the opening you've got and match the style of an existing gate or surround where there is one. Pergolas are built by hand on site to your own design, working around planting, paving and fences, with posts set properly so the structure stays solid rather than working loose.

A good deal of my work comes through other builders and contractors who bring me in on their own jobs, which is usually a better reference than anything written on a website. If you are running the job, you already know what you need from a carpenter: turn up on the day agreed, work to the drawings, and not create work for the trade that follows.
Send drawings, a schedule or even photos and measurements and I will price from them. If something on the drawing will not work once it meets the actual building, which happens more often on older properties than anyone would like, you will hear about it before it is built rather than after.

Older houses rarely have a standard opening anywhere, so window and exterior joinery on a period property is measured and made to what is actually there rather than ordered off a size chart. That covers the window itself, the reveal and the board inside, and the barge boards, finials and apex detail outside.
Rotten sections get cut out and replaced with new timber matched to the original profile rather than filled over, because filler on an exterior frame is a repair you do twice.
I work off scaffold where the job needs it and coordinate with whoever else is on site so the building is not left open longer than it has to be.
